I wear the Columbia style outdoor QUICK DRY khaki pants and Under Armour T-shirts, can bring nicer shirt for church but anything is ok. Good tennis shoes or light hiking shoes best. (I have the North Face hiking tennis shoes…have worn on 10+ trips there…all I ever take…flip flops for last day and showers is good…or buy there for $3)…shorts OK too. Can buy or bring shorts/clothes to leave also as they get dirty. They will wash clothes for us if get in a bind.
We will have bottled water everywhere. Suggest buy one or two at airport in Miami before takeoff.
I have never gotten sick. However, I do take CIPRO. Suggest take one day before going, then one a day while on trip (kills any bacteria you might get) …in USA its cheap, like $10 for 100 qty.(prescription) Do consult your physician for CIPRO and any other vaccines you feel necessary. I have never had any of the others. Have made about 15 trips.
Bug Spray (with DEETS best) Wear at all times on arrival, when you sleep, after showers, etc… There is even a product you can “pre-wash” your clothes in that doesn’t smell and repels them. The bracelets help too. Mosquitos are not bad, but that is where most sickness comes into play.
No shots required, but that’s up to you and your physician (I wouldn’t read all the crazy websites on safety/sickness/etc…., or you’ll be in fear every minute you are there…I have taken my wife and kids too)
Hotels will run you about $60 per night (2 per room) You could do 4 per room and then its $30. Cary will coordinate the room assignments.
Food per meal is about $5-8 per meal at hotels, $10-$15 at nice restaurants (nice restaurant on boardwalk in Cap Haitian…nice is relative remember)
While in Fort Liberte, Pastor Anilus and wife will prepare all 3 meals…its is AMAZING…don’t listen to Cary)
Hotels all have WiFi…your phone works all over Haiti too. Suggest either buy Global Plan for phone/texting…or buy a cheap phone there (about $15)…My phone is always on there. Feel free to give mine out if you want to keep yours off. (940.704.8774) Download Viber or Magic Jack APPS for phone calls when WIFI available.
USD are fine. You will get change in Gourdes or Haitian Dollars(easy to change/spend)..don’t take large bills unless at hotel checking out, suggest lots of $1,5’s and 10’s or less denominations. THERE ARE NO ATM’s.
